Life After Treatment

Tips for Maintaining Life after Treatment

Completing a successful mental health treatment program is a significant accomplishment, but the journey toward recovery is far from over. Maintaining long term success requires ongoing effort, commitment, and support.

At Valor Behavioral Health, we understand the importance of maintaining a healthy mental health state and offer a variety of resources to help our clients achieve long-term success. Here are some tips for maintaining sobriety after completing treatment:

  • Attend support groups: Support groups, such as 12-step programs, can provide a sense of community and a safe place to discuss challenges and experiences related to sobriety. Attending support groups can also provide opportunities to connect with others who have successfully maintained sobriety and learn from their experiences.
  • Build a support network: Surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people can be a valuable resource in maintaining sobriety. Building a support network of friends, family members, and others who understand and support your mental health and sobriety can provide you with encouragement and help you stay accountable.
  • Develop new hobbies and interests: Engaging in new activities and hobbies can help take your mind off of alcohol and substances and provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Pursuing new interests can also help you form new relationships and provide a sense of accomplishment.
  • Stay active: Regular exercise can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve overall mental and physical health. Exercise can also provide an outlet for frustration and help prevent boredom, which can be trigger for alcohol and substance use.
  • Practice mindfulness and self-care: Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga, can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Additionally, taking care of your physical and mental health through proper nutrition, sleep, and self-care can help maintain a healthy mental state.
  • Seek professional help when needed: There will be times when additional support is needed. Whether it’s individual therapy, couples therapy, or medication-assisted treatment, seeking professional help can provide additional support and help you overcome challenges.
  • Avoid high-risk situations: Being aware of and avoiding situations that may trigger alcohol or substance use can help prevent relapse. This may include avoiding people, places, or activities associated with substance use.
  • Be open and honest with loved ones: Sharing your struggles and successes with loved ones can help build trust and deepen relationships. Being open and honest about your mental health state or recovery journey can also provide a sense of accountability. Celebrate small victories: Celebrating small victories along the way, such as reaching milestones in your recovery, can provide a sense of accomplishment and help build momentum toward long-term success.
  • Remember the reasons why you chose to ask for help: Reflecting on the reasons why you chose to pursue mental health treatment and or sobriety, such as improved health, relationships, and quality of life, can provide motivation and a sense of purpose in maintaining a healthy journey.

At Valor Behavioral Health, we are dedicated to helping our clients achieve and maintain life after treatment. We offer a variety of resources and support to help them on their journey.
