Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by significant mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood swings can affect sleep, energy levels, behavior, judgment, and the ability to think clearly. Episodes of mood swings may occur rarely or multiple times a year. While most individuals will experience some emotional symptoms between episodes, some may not experience any. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar disorder affects approximately 2.8% of the U.S. adult population in any given year. The condition is typically diagnosed in the late teens or early adult years and continues throughout life, requiring ongoing management.
Understanding the symptoms associated with each type of episode (depressive and manic) is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
During a depressive episode, individuals may experience:
A manic or hypomanic episode is characterized by:
Bipolar disorder treatment involves managing the symptoms of bipolar disorder, which can include extreme mood swings with episodes of mania and depression. Effective treatment is typically multifaceted, incorporating psychiatric care, medications, and tailored therapeutic programs. The goal is to stabilize mood swings and help individuals lead a more balanced and fulfilling life.
Recognizing the need for treatment is the first step towards recovery.
Key signs that you might need help include:
If these symptoms sound familiar and are affecting your quality of life, it is important to seek a professional evaluation. Our mental health professionals can provide a diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options that can greatly improve your symptoms and overall well-being.
Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is designed for individuals with bipolar disorder who require intensive treatment but do not need 24-hour supervision. PHP serves as a middle ground between inpatient care and outpatient programs, offering structured support during the day while allowing clients to return to their homes at night.
This program typically includes daily therapeutic sessions, medication management, and continuous monitoring of mental health by professionals. It is ideal for individuals who have a stable home environment yet need more support than what regular outpatient care can offer. Sessions may cover various therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Holistic Therapy, Somatic Therapy, psychoeducation, and skills training to manage symptoms and prevent relapse.
The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is less rigorous than PHP but provides more support than standard outpatient services. It is particularly beneficial for individuals transitioning from full-time hospitalization or those who have completed a PHP and still require structured care. IOP allows individuals to engage in their regular daily activities, such as work or school, while still receiving treatment.
This program typically involves attending therapy sessions several times a week, focusing on continued recovery and coping strategies. Treatment in an IOP includes group therapy, individual counseling, and ongoing medication management, all aimed at managing the ups and downs of bipolar disorder effectively.
Our Outpatient Program (OP) is designed for long-term maintenance and management of bipolar disorder. It is suited for individuals who have passed through more intensive phases of treatment and are now looking to maintain their stability and continue their recovery journey while fully engaging in their life activities. The OP provides flexibility, with clients typically attending therapy sessions once a week or biweekly based on their individual needs.
This program focuses on reinforcing coping strategies, managing medications, and providing ongoing support to handle the challenges of daily life. It’s an excellent option for those who need periodic check-ins and assistance to ensure they remain on track with their mental health goals.
Effective treatment for bipolar disorder usually involves a combination of:

Ashley Stover2024-09-11Extremely Disappointing Experience I recently attended Valor Behavioral Health for mental health treatment, but unfortunately, my experience was overwhelmingly negative. While I had hoped to find support and healing, I encountered several major issues. After serving 20 years in the United States Air Force I have PTSD, Depression and Anxiety and I was very hopeful to receive help from Valor but it ended up being a total waste of 3 months of my time, money, and energy. The quality of care was subpar, with classes that were unengaging and unhelpful. However, my main concerns were with the administrative team, who were consistently unprofessional and unresponsive. Even more alarming, I witnessed staff members engaging in inappropriate relationships with clients, which is a serious ethical violation. Furthermore, I suspect that the facility may be engaging in insurance fraud, which is not only illegal but also a betrayal of trust. What's even more disturbing is that many of the positive reviews I've seen online appear to be fake, written by actual staff members themselves. This lack of transparency and integrity further erodes trust in an already deeply flawed institution. Overall, I would strongly advise others to explore alternative options for mental health treatment. There are likely better, more reputable facilities that can provide the support and care you deserve. This review will be deleted soon since it’s not a 5 star review!!Liam Parsell2024-08-18My experience at Valor has been nothing less than outstanding. The owner does not live in Georgia.Evan Mccavey2024-08-15I highly recommend Valor Behavioral Health! The therapist, and the whole team goes above and beyond. I have been to multiple treatment centers, and as a 19 year old I can say this is the best treatment for anyone young or older. They communicate effectively and clearly. Any issue arises; they handle it with the utmost professionalism. The qualities they have shown to shine above all are respect, care, and how they truly figure out a individualized treatment plan that will help you or a loved one get pass with whatever you struggle with mental health and or substance abuse wise.Charles Aldridge2024-08-07Overall a great experience.
