When someone lives with a mental health disorder, it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Poor mental health also affects family members, who struggle to understand what their loved one is going through and how to help them. Family therapy – Atlanta can provide the guidance and support needed to navigate these challenges together.

Valor Behavioral Health includes Family Therapy – Atlanta as part of a package of different therapy modalities. Our mental health outpatient programs address the impact that having a mental health disorder has on a family. We gather select family members together under the direction of a therapist so the family can figure out how to communicate better and support their loved one. People with poor mental health who have a strong support system typically do better when it comes to healing than those who go it alone.
Family Therapy in Atlanta gathers family members of a loved one together in a group led by a licensed therapist. The purpose is to provide the individual who struggles with a mental health disorder a new platform from which they can receive support. A mental illness doesn’t happen to just one person. It is visible to and impacts the lives of family members around them. For this reason, we include family therapy as part of our mental health outpatient programs.
Chosen family members can commute to our facility for scheduled therapy sessions and learn how to understand and support their loved ones. This leaves the family members with a greater understanding of how their loved one experiences their mental illness. From that, the family learns ideas to offer support and encouragement to help the individual make more progress in healing.
Family therapy sessions may take place over just a few appointments or several of them. Before it commences, the therapist will discuss with the patient who they would like to invite to participate in family therapy. Someone who proves triggering or unsafe to be around will not be asked to join in the sessions. As well, family therapy in Atlanta can include close friends who feel like family.
During the first session, the therapist will explain the goals of family therapy and how the communication will work. Discussions during the sessions will target how the loved one experiences their illness and what support will be the most helpful to them. The participants work as a team to bolster their family members and repair any damage done in the past. Everyone has the opportunity to speak their mind as long as it’s done with respect and the goal of healing as a family unit.
We include family therapy as part of our mental health outpatient program because of the powerful dynamic it can provide. When someone has a mental health disorder, it can cause discord in a family. Miscommunication can develop, as well as resentment, and a misunderstanding about how much of their symptoms someone can control.
Family members who worry about their loved one may keep quiet for fear of upsetting them, or try too hard to attempt to “save” them. When a family becomes embroiled in this lack of harmony, grudges, anger, codependency, and resentment can build.
While the idea of family therapy in Atlanta may appear just to be people sitting around talking to some reluctant family member, it actually has tremendous benefits. The therapist helps identify any negative patterns related to the development and continuation of the mental health disorder. Addressing this and putting them to rest helps everyone in the sessions.
Parents, children, siblings, close friends, and more learn to communicate their truth while respecting other people’s experiences and emotions. When a family heals, it helps elevate the individual’s ability to minimize or overcome their symptoms of poor mental health.
We speak to each person who attends our mental health outpatient program to determine if family therapy is a good idea for them. Someone who doesn’t have nearby family or is on their own might not benefit from it. On the other hand, people with family members who can travel to the appointments and are willing to do so will be identified and invited to participate.
A therapy schedule including dates and times will be shared with everyone. Each session takes approximately an hour (longer if necessary) and typically takes place once a week.
