When most people think about prescription drugs, they picture getting a prescription from their doctor for a legitimate medical or psychological condition. If the condition is not chronic, the individual will discontinue taking the drug without incident. However, there is a much darker side to using this type of medication that can lead to a full-blown addiction.

What is Prescription Drug Addiction?

It’s easy to think about drug addiction as only relating to street drugs like cocaine and heroin, but it happens with prescription medications, too. The person either has a prescription from their doctor or obtains the drugs illegally. Some do both to ensure they have a large supply on hand as their need to increase the amount they take builds. Others engage in doctor shopping, although laws are cracking down on that.

Prescription drug rehab provides structured treatment for people who have lost control of their usage of prescription medications. Rehabs help individuals face their addiction, learn healthy coping skills, and disarm the power of triggers to abuse drugs.

Most Addictive Prescription Drugs

Anyone can become susceptible to prescription drug abuse, but some of the medications have a higher incidence of addiction than others. This includes opioids, stimulants, and sedatives. The most commonly abused types of prescription drugs are:

  • Oxycontin
  • Xanax
  • Adderall
  • Ritalin
  • Percocet
  • Valium
  • Dexedrine
  • Ambien

Some people take a combination of pills and end up addicted to more than one substance.

Our Prescription Drug Rehab Programs in Atlanta, Georgia

Each person we treat is matched with the right level of care for their specific needs. The differences in the levels of care include the number of hours of therapy required per week and how many different types of therapy sessions are needed. The levels of outpatient care include:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Our highest level of care is similar to a residential rehab but does not require the person to move out of their home. Treatment sessions last all day Monday through Friday with time built in for lunch and breaks.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): This level of care still leaves time during the day for a person to attend work or school. Treatment sessions are Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. several hours per day.
  • Evening IOP: This level of care works well for people with daytime responsibilities and who prefer to attend treatment at night. Sessions are from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Sober Living: We partner with sober living homes in our area to give people an option for attending vital treatment appointments and then returning to a safe, substance-free living situation.
