Understanding the Costs of Mental Health Treatment

People find it difficult enough to search for a program that meets the specific needs they have. When the search is expanded to understanding mental health insurance coverage, it can feel even more imposing. The cost of mental health treatment can vary widely depending on the type of treatment, the length of stay, and the location of the facility.

The cost can also be influenced by the severity of the person’s mental health disorder, any co-occurring substance use disorders, and the specifics of their insurance plan.

Insurances We're In-Network With

Valor Behavioral Health is in-network with several insurance companies. These include:

Understanding Insurance Terms

Many people find insurance terms confusing. Some common ones include:

  • Co-Payment: The amount the policyholder pays for a clinician visit, medication, or hospitalization.
  • Covered Expenses: Any services covered by the insurance policy.
  • Deductible: How much money the individual must pay on an annual basis before their insurance plan starts covering some or all of the expenses.
  • Pre-existing Condition: a physical or mental health condition the individual had before the start date of their insurance plan.
  • Primary Care Physician (PCP): The person’s main physician who they see for their everyday needs. The PCP provides referrals to specialists for specialized treatment.

Understanding Your Mental Health Insurance Coverage Benefits

To get the most out of your mental health insurance coverage, read through the policy you purchased and familiarize yourself with issues like what is covered, your co-payment and deductible, and if you need pre-approval to begin treatment with a clinician or facility. If you have any questions, call the number on your ID card or visit the company’s website.

Making The Most of Your Mental Health Insurance Coverage

Anyone who wants to understand their mental health insurance coverage should read through their policy. They should also navigate through the company’s website to find answers to their questions and discover information they might not have previously known. Use in-network providers whenever necessary and make sure to get prior approval before seeing someone besides the PCP. If a claim is denied, the individual can exercise their right to appeal it.

In-Network Providers vs Out-of-Network Providers

In-network providers have entered an agreement with the insurance company to provide discounted services that benefit the policyholder. Out-of-network providers do not have an agreement in place. This makes their services more expensive than in-network ones. As well, the individual may need prior approval to use an out-of-network provider.

Utilizing Other Resources Through Your Plan

People with insurance may purchase a supplemental insurance plan to help provide extra coverage and lower their cost of services. They can also inquire about whether or not Medicare or Medicaid can be combined with their insurance coverage if they participate in either of those options.

Understanding Different Policy Types

There are a variety of types of policies to help meet the needs of different customers. Common ones include:

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO)
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
  • Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO)
  • Employer-Provided Insurance
  • Medicare
  • Medicaid
  • COBRA Health Insurance

How Do I Know How Much My Health Insurance Covers?

If you are unclear on what your mental health insurance coverage includes, you can call the phone number on your ID card or visit the company’s website. Make sure to have your Member ID number handy. As well, many mental health treatment facilities offer insurance verification when you contact them. The admissions team is schooled in many types of insurance plans and can walk you through what yours will cover in their program.

What Programs We're In-Network With

We offer several levels of care to maximize the number of people we can treat. Each person will be assessed to determine the right program for their specific needs. The levels of care we offer include:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): The highest level of outpatient care takes place a minimum of six hours per day, five days per week.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): This level of care features the same structured types of therapy as PHP but takes place fewer hours per day, several days per week.
  • Evening IOP: This includes the same types of therapy modalities offered in Daytime IOP, but the sessions take place in the evening.
  • Outpatient Program (OP): The last step in outpatient treatment usually just includes one or two types of therapy sessions per week.
  • Adolescent Program: This program for young people can last from several weeks to several months, depending on the needs of the individual.
